17,600 Gallon Tank Car

Prototype Information

Trinity introduced the 17,600-gallon tank car in the 1990s for hauling corn sweeteners, chemicals, acids, and other hazardous liquids. Its size struck a balance between capacity and route flexibility. The car featured a robust welded steel tank, often with a rubber or glass lining depending on the commodity.

It typically rode on 100-ton trucks and included safety features like top fittings protection, bottom outlet valves, and thermal protection. The 17,600-gallon size became common in fleets serving the chemical and refining industries. Many of these cars remain in service today under various leasing companies and shippers.
