23,500 Gallon Tank Car

Prototype Information

The 23,500-gallon tank car emerged in the 1970s. It was built to haul chemicals, ethanol, and other flammable liquids. The car had a general-purpose design with a cylindrical tank and safety fittings. Many were insulated or lined, depending on the cargo. Builders included ACF, Trinity, and Union Tank Car. These cars rode on 100-ton trucks and met DOT-111 standards. They became common in mixed freight trains. Many remained in service into the 2000s, though newer designs have started to replace them.
