33,000 Gallon Tank Car

Prototype Information

The 33,000-gallon whale belly tank car appeared in the 1960s. It was designed to carry light, high-volume liquids like LPG and anhydrous ammonia. The “whale belly” shape allowed a lower center section for extra capacity. These cars had a distinctive bulged tank and rode on heavy-duty trucks. Many were built by companies like ACF and Union Tank Car. They often featured safety valves and insulation. Use of these cars declined by the 2000s as newer designs took over.
