40' Plug Door Box Car

Prototype Information

The 40′ plug door boxcar appeared in the 1950s. It was designed to carry goods needing better sealing and insulation, like food and paper. The plug door closed flush with the car body, reducing air and moisture leaks. These cars had steel construction and rode on 70-ton trucks. Railroads used them widely in the 1960s and 1970s. They gradually gave way to larger 50′ cars as shipping needs changed. Many 40′ plug door boxcars were retired by the 1980s.
