42' Coil Car

Prototype Information

National Steel Car introduced its 42′ coil steel car in the 1970s. It was built to haul heavy rolled steel efficiently. The car used a fishbelly sill for added strength. A low deck and built-in cradles held the coils in place. Many had removable hoods to protect the load from weather.

Canadian National and other roads used them widely. The design was simple, strong, and built to last. Many remained in service for decades. Some were later rebuilt or modified.
