4650 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The ACF 4650 covered hopper was introduced by American Car and Foundry in the early 1970s. It featured a capacity of 4,650 cubic feet and was designed for transporting high-volume, low-density commodities like grain, plastic pellets, and fertilizer. The car had three bays, gravity outlets, and the distinctive Centerflow design with smooth sides and no center sill. Its efficient loading and unloading made it a popular choice with railroads and private shippers. Thousands were built through the 1980s, and many remain in service today, often rebuilt or repainted.
