48' All Purpose Well Car

Prototype Information

Gunderson introduced the 48-foot all-purpose well car in 1993. It handled both containers and highway trailers. The design used low sidewalls and twin trailer hitches. Railroads used them in drawbar-connected sets for flexibility. They carried 20- to 48-foot containers or piggyback trailers.

As container sizes grew, railroads rebuilt many of these cars. Some were shortened to 40 feet and renumbered in series like DTTX 455000. Others were stretched to 53 feet. Trailer hitches were often removed during rebuilds.

Though not as common today, some 48-foot cars remain in service. They often carry short containers in the well and longer ones on top. Their sturdy design and versatility made them key to 1990s intermodal growth.
