50' AAR Plug Door Box Car

Prototype Information

The 50′ AAR plug door box car was introduced in the 1950s under standards set by the Association of American Railroads. It featured a 50-foot length and a tight-sealing plug door, ideal for cargo needing protection from weather and temperature swings. These cars commonly carried paper, food products, and other high-value goods. The plug door design reduced damage from moisture and improved security over traditional sliding doors. Many railroads and builders, including Pullman-Standard and ACF, produced versions through the 1960s and 1970s. The cars became a staple of general freight service for decades.
