50' FMC 5347 Box Car

Prototype Information

The FMC 5247 boxcar emerged in the late 1970s as a high-capacity, general service boxcar designed for increased efficiency and improved loading. Built by FMC Corporation, this 50-foot boxcar featured a 5247 cubic foot capacity, exterior-post construction, and either single or double plug doors. Railroads used it for a wide range of commodities including paper, packaged goods, and food products. The car’s clean design, durable construction, and standardized dimensions made it a common sight across North American railroads into the 1990s and beyond. Many remain in service today under shortlines, leasing companies, or as modified storage or maintenance cars.
