50' FMC 5503 Box Car

Prototype Information

FMC introduced the 50′ 5503 boxcar in the early 1980s as an evolution of its earlier high-cube boxcar designs. With a 5,503 cubic foot capacity, this car targeted industries that needed efficient loading for lightweight, high-volume commodities like paper products, appliances, and foodstuffs. The design featured an exterior-post body, wide plug doors, and often included load-securing equipment like interior side rails or logistics posts. Railroads and leasing companies adopted the 5503 for its durability and versatility. Many of these cars remain in service today, especially in paper and forest product service.
