50' GARX Reefer

Prototype Information

The 50′ GARX reefer was introduced in the 1950s by General American Refrigerator Express. It was a steel car designed for shipping perishable goods. The longer 50′ length offered more capacity than earlier 40′ reefers. Many had plug doors and insulation, with some using mechanical refrigeration. GARX leased these cars to various shippers and railroads. They were common through the 1960s and 1970s. Newer mechanical reefers and changing freight needs led to their gradual retirement.
