50' NSC Plug Door Box Car

Prototype Information

The National Steel Car 5277, 5182, and 5111 plug door boxcars rolled out between the late 1970s and 1980s to meet growing demand for high-capacity freight service.

The 5277-cubic foot model came first. National Steel Car built it for carrying paper and other moisture-sensitive goods. The plug door sealed tightly to protect cargo, while the smooth sides and welded steel body simplified loading and maintenance. Canadian National, CP Rail, and leasing fleets used these cars heavily.

The 5182-cubic foot boxcar followed with a slightly smaller capacity. It shared the same rugged design and plug door but catered to different shipper needs or route restrictions.

The 5111-cubic foot version rounded out the group. It carried less volume but stayed versatile, serving general freight markets with the same emphasis on durability and efficient design.

These boxcars proved tough and reliable. Many stayed in service for decades, often rebuilt or repainted for leasing companies and short lines.
