50' Postwar Box Car

Prototype Information

The 50′ postwar single and double door boxcars were introduced in the late 1940s and 1950s. They replaced the earlier 40′ designs to handle larger loads. Single door versions were used for general freight. Double door models handled bulky cargo like autos and machinery. Both types had all-steel bodies and rode on 70-ton trucks. Railroads chose door types based on cargo needs. These boxcars became common through the 1960s and 1970s. They were eventually replaced by larger, more specialized freight cars.
