64' Trinity Reefer
Prototype Information
TrinityRail introduced the 64-foot refrigerated boxcar, or 64′ reefer, in the early 2000s to give shippers a more efficient way to move temperature-sensitive freight. Built for produce, meat, and other perishables, the car combined high capacity with precise temperature control for long-haul rail service.
At 64 feet long and offering more than 6,500 cubic feet of space, it outclassed older 57-foot designs. Trinity used smooth-sided aluminum construction, advanced insulation, and diesel-powered refrigeration units with GPS-based monitoring to keep cargo fresh and secure.
Railroads like BNSF and Union Pacific quickly adopted these cars, often through partnerships with Railex and later the Cold Connect program. The Trinity 64′ reefer helped modernize refrigerated rail service, boosting efficiency and reliability across North America’s cold supply chain.
