68' Flat Car

Prototype Information

Railroads began using 68-foot flat cars in the mid-20th century to move heavier and longer loads that earlier flat cars couldn’t handle. These cars hauled machinery, structural steel, military vehicles, and other oversized freight. With a 68-foot deck and 100-ton capacity, they offered flexibility through features like stake pockets, tie-downs, and sometimes bulkheads. Railroads later modified many for intermodal service, panel transport, or maintenance use. Some still serve today in both freight and support roles.
