70 Ton 3 Bay Hopper

Prototype Information

The AAR 70-ton 3-bay hopper was introduced in the 1950s. It followed American Association of Railroads standards for coal and aggregate service. The 3-bay design allowed for better weight distribution and higher capacity than 2-bay hoppers. These cars were built with riveted or welded steel bodies. They typically featured peaked ends and bottom discharge gates. Railroads used them heavily for coal, stone, and ore. Thousands were produced by builders like Bethlehem, Pullman-Standard, and ACF. They remained in service into the 1980s before being replaced by newer designs.
