ACF 3560 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The ACF 3560 covered hopper rolled out in the early 1970s from American Car & Foundry. Built to handle dense commodities like cement and sand, it held 3,560 cubic feet and rode on a three-bay gravity-discharge design. Its rounded roof carried three loading hatches, and the sides featured external posts and horizontal stiffeners for added strength.

Unlike ACF’s Center Flow cars, the 3560 used a conventional underframe. Railroads and private shippers put these cars to work in heavy-duty service, especially in the cement industry. Though later designs offered higher capacity or more efficient unloading, the 3560’s rugged build kept many in service well into the 21st century.
