ACF 5701 Covered Hopper
Prototype Information
The ACF 5701 covered hopper was built by American Car and Foundry (ACF). It had a capacity of 5,701 cubic feet. The car was designed to haul light, dry bulk goods like grain, plastic pellets, or flour.
It was introduced in the 1970s as part of ACF’s Center Flow line. The car had a cylindrical body and center discharge bays. This made loading and unloading faster and more efficient.
The 5701 was popular with grain companies and chemical shippers. Many were leased or owned by private companies. The large size and simple design made it reliable and easy to maintain.
These hoppers stayed in use for decades. Some were rebuilt or repainted. Others were retired as newer models arrived.
