ACF 5748 Covered Hopper
Prototype Information
American Car and Foundry (ACF) introduced the 5748-cubic-foot covered hopper in 1972. This model belongs to the “Center Flow” family of railcars. Unlike older hoppers, the Center Flow design lacks a heavy center sill. This allows ACF to place discharge outlets along the center of the car for more efficient unloading. The 5748 specifically evolved from the earlier 5701 model and features four distinct bays to hold massive amounts of dry bulk cargo.
While it shares the same external body as the 5800-cubic-foot plastics hopper, the 5748 is specialized for the grain industry. It features continuous loading hatches along the roof and gravity-based outlets at the bottom. Since production began, ACF has built thousands of cars in this family. Most of these cars operate under private leasing marks or for major agricultural companies. Their durable, high-capacity design ensures they remain a primary choice for moving grain across North America today.
