ACF 89' Flat Car

Prototype Information

American Car & Foundry (ACF) began producing the 89’4″ flat car in the 1960s to handle long and heavy freight like structural steel, pipe, rail, and utility poles. ACF designed these cars with a low-profile steel deck, multiple stake pockets, and a rugged frame to perform in tough service conditions. Railroads and leasing companies, including TrailerTrain (TTX), quickly adopted the design for bulk and oversized loads.

Over time, operators modified many of these cars for intermodal use, maintenance-of-way duty, or specialized cargo like wind turbine components. Some continue to serve today across North American railroads.
