Portec 3000 Covered Hopper
Prototype Information
Portec introduced the 3000 cubic foot covered hopper in the 1970s for hauling dense bulk commodities like cement, sand, lime, and similar industrial materials. The compact size matched the weight limits of heavy lading while keeping the car within standard length and clearance profiles. Its welded steel construction, three bays, and gravity discharge outlets allowed fast loading and unloading in plant service. Many featured trough-style roof hatches for easy filling. Railroads and private operators used the Portec 3000 heavily in regional and short-haul service, often in unit trains serving cement plants or quarries. Although production ended decades ago, a number of these rugged cars still work in dedicated industrial service today.
