PS-2 2 Bay Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The PS-2 2-bay covered hopper was introduced by Pullman-Standard in 1953. It was built to carry heavy, dry bulk materials like cement, sand, and soda ash. The car had two gravity discharge bays for easy unloading. Early models held about 2,003 cubic feet, with later versions holding slightly more.

It featured either riveted or welded construction. The sides had ribs or panels for added strength. A center sill underframe supported the car’s weight. Its short length helped carry dense loads without overloading.

Railroads and industries across North America used these cars throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Many remained in service for decades. Some were rebuilt and kept in use. The PS-2 2-bay helped set the standard for modern covered hoppers.
