Thrall 2743 Gondola

Prototype Information

The Thrall 2743 gondola debuted in the late 1970s as Thrall Car’s modern answer to rising demand for high-capacity, general-service mill gondolas. With a 2,743-cubic-foot interior volume, these cars provided steel mills, scrap processors, and industrial shippers a rugged, versatile platform for hauling coil steel, structural shapes, plate, scrap, and other dense commodities.

Thrall designed the 2743 with a heavier underframe, tall sides, and durable weld construction that held up well under repeated hammer-loading and mill-service abuse. Railroads and leasing companies adopted the car in large numbers through the 1980s, often equipping them with coil racks or covers depending on service. Many 2743s remained in frontline duty for decades, and rebuilt examples still appear in scrap and general-industry service today, underscoring the design’s durability and long-term utility.
