Thrall 4750 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The Thrall 4750 covered hopper was introduced in the late 1970s. It was built by Thrall Car Manufacturing of Chicago Heights, Illinois. The car had a capacity of 4,750 cubic feet. It used a 3-bay design and was rated for 263,000 lbs. It was mainly used to haul grain and other bulk commodities.

Many railroads bought these cars, including Rock Island and Burlington Northern. Later, some were acquired by lines like Chicago & North Western. Thrall was purchased by Trinity Industries in 2001. Many Thrall 4750s are still in service today.
