B23-7 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

GE introduced the B23-7 in 1977 as part of its Dash 7 product line. This four-axle locomotive replaced the older U23B model in the company’s catalog. It featured a 12-cylinder FDL engine that produced 2,250 horsepower. GE designed the unit to compete directly with EMD’s GP38-2 and GP39-2 models. Major railroads like Conrail, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific added these versatile units to their fleets for light-duty freight and branch line service.

The B23-7 offered improved fuel efficiency and reliability compared to previous Universal series models. It used a solid-state control system to manage power and wheel slip effectively. Production ran until 1984, with GE delivering over 500 units to North American customers. While most Class I railroads retired their fleets by the early 2000s, many B23-7s found a second life on shortline and regional railroads. These locomotives still pull freight on several smaller lines today.
