MP-36 Diesel Locomotive

MotivePower Inc. introduced the MP36PH in 2003 as a successor to the EMD F40PH. This MPXpress model targeted the North American commuter rail market. It arrived as the first passenger locomotive to meet strict FRA crashworthiness standards. Engineers gave it a reinforced cab and a unique streamlined nose. The locomotive draws 3,600 horsepower from its 16-cylinder EMD 645F3B engine. Modern electronic controls manage this power to ensure reliable performance.

MotivePower offered the locomotive in two main versions. The MP36PH-3S used a static inverter for head-end power, which forced the engine to run at high speeds even at stations. The more successful MP36PH-3C carried a separate Caterpillar generator instead. This setup let the main engine focus on traction while improving overall fuel efficiency. Over 100 units eventually served agencies like Caltrain, MARC, and Metrolink. These locomotives remain a common sight across suburban rail corridors today.
