F9 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
EMD introduced the F9 in 1954 as the final standard model in its highly successful F-unit series. This locomotive utilized the 16-cylinder 567C prime mover to produce 1,750 horsepower. It looked very similar to the earlier F7 but featured an extra porthole on the side and improved internal components. EMD built these units for both freight and passenger service, offering them in cab-equipped A units and cabless B units.
Railroads across North America, including the Santa Fe, Northern Pacific, and Canadian National, purchased the F9 to modernize their fleets. The model proved extremely reliable, though production ended in 1960 as railroads shifted their preference toward hood-style locomotives like the GP9. Many F9s enjoyed long second lives on commuter lines or in special “Executive Train” service. Today, several preserved F9s continue to operate on tourist railroads and reside in museums.
