M420 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) built the M420 between 1973 and 1977. This 2,000-horsepower locomotive was one of the first to feature the wide-nosed Canadian Comfort Cab. This design improved crew safety and became the industry standard for modern engines. Most units used MLW’s Zero Weight Transfer trucks to improve traction. Canadian National was the largest buyer, ordering 80 units to modernize its medium-duty fleet.
Other railroads also bought the M420, including British Columbia Railway and the Providence & Worcester. P&W’s version, the M420R, was unique because it used recycled trucks from older Alco locomotives. While CN retired its fleet by the late 1990s, the M420 remains a favorite on shortlines today. Its reliable Alco 251 engine and rugged construction have kept many units in service for over 50 years.
