RS-18 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The Alco RS-18 was a versatile 1,800-horsepower diesel locomotive built by Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) between 1956 and 1968. It served as the Canadian version of the Alco RS-11. Designers built it to handle everything from heavy freight to branch line chores and passenger service. It featured the reliable Alco 251B V12 engine, which improved greatly over earlier models.
Canadian National and Canadian Pacific bought hundreds of these units. They became the backbone of Canadian railroading for decades. Many units underwent “RS-18u” rebuild programs in the 1980s to extend their lives even further. While most have retired from major railroads, several still work on shortlines or survive in museums. Their rugged design and distinct Alco sound make them a lasting favorite for railfans.
