82' Trinity Reefer
Prototype Information
Trinity built 810 reefers with a 7883 cubic foot capacity in 2001. A second group followed in 2003 with internal changes that created a 7711 cubic foot capacity. Both versions measured 82 feet long and 17 feet tall. Builders mounted a commercial HVAC unit and a 300-gallon fuel tank on the A-end. Heavy insulation lined the car body interior. JR Simplot also purchased 250 of the 7711 cubic foot cars under JRSX reporting marks.
These modern reefers haul the same cargo as older ice-bunker and mechanical models. BNSF often places a block of these cars on the head-end of intermodal trains from California to Chicago. Other units transport frozen potato products from the Pacific Northwest over former Northern Pacific and Great Northern lines. JRSX cars typically carry frozen potatoes over Canadian Pacific routes. BNSF also uses these Trinity reefers to move export meat to the Port of Los Angeles for Asian markets.
