SD70M Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD SD70M hit the rails in 1992 as part of EMD’s next-generation SD70 series. It packed 4,000 horsepower from a 16-710G3B engine and used advanced modular electronics to deliver strong pulling power, better fuel efficiency, and easier maintenance. Early units had a traditional cab, while later ones rolled out with the wide-nose “whisper cab” to give crews a quieter, more comfortable ride.

U.S. railroads quickly embraced the SD70M, with Union Pacific leading the fleet in intermodal and general freight service. Its combination of power, reliability, and crew-friendly design cemented the SD70 series as EMD’s flagship locomotive through the 1990s and early 2000s.
