40' Thrall Rebuilt Well Car

Prototype Information

Thrall began its well car rebuilding program in 2003. The project addressed a shift in the intermodal market. During the 1990s, Thrall built many 48-foot “Husky Stack” and articulated cars. However, the industry quickly moved toward 53-foot containers for domestic shipping. This left the older 48-foot wells largely obsolete. To save the equipment, Thrall shortened the wells to a standard 40 feet.

These rebuilt cars now focus on international trade. The 40-foot well perfectly fits standard ISO containers used in global shipping. Operators typically load 20-foot or 40-foot units into the well. They can still carry larger 40-foot or 53-foot containers on the top level. This conversion extended the life of hundreds of cars. Today, they remain a common sight in yellow paint across North American rails.
