E7 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD E7 debuted in 1945 as an advanced passenger locomotive in the E-unit series. It used twin 12-cylinder 567 engines producing a combined 2,000 horsepower and featured the iconic streamlined “bulldog” nose. The E7 offered smooth, reliable performance for high-speed passenger service.
Railroads including the New York Central, Pennsylvania Railroad, Santa Fe, and Union Pacific used E7s on premier trains such as the Super Chief and Twentieth Century Limited. Production ran until 1949, and many units served into the 1960s, helping railroads complete the transition from steam to diesel on top-tier passenger trains.
