GP9M Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD GP9M is a rebuilt locomotive, created by railroads and rebuild shops starting in the late 1960s. Crews took older units—like GP7s, F-units, or other early EMD models—and upgraded them to perform like GP9s.

Rebuilders kept the original frames but swapped out engines, rewired electrical systems, and updated components. Most GP9Ms used 567-series engines, often reaching the same 1,750 horsepower as a standard GP9. Some had less power, depending on the donor locomotive.

Railroads used GP9Ms to save money while extending the life of older equipment. These rebuilt units handled switching, local freight, and light road service. Many stayed in service for decades, showing how effective and reliable rebuild programs could be.
