SD45 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD SD45 debuted in 1965 as a high-horsepower, six-axle freight locomotive, producing 3,600 horsepower from its 20-cylinder 645E3 diesel engine. Part of EMD’s SD (“Special Duty”) series, it was built for heavy freight service, especially coal and intermodal trains.
Its long hood and distinctive flared radiators made it easily recognizable. Major operators included Southern Pacific, Santa Fe, and Conrail, which relied on its power and speed.
Over 1,200 units were built between 1965 and 1971. Many were later rebuilt into SD45R or SD40-2 variants, extending their service life well into the 1990s and 2000s. The SD45 remains iconic for its combination of power, style, and performance in the late 1960s freight era.
