B40-8 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD B40-8 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) between 1984 and 1988. It is part of the Dash 8 series and produces 4,000 horsepower with a 16-cylinder 710G engine. The “B” indicates its B-B wheel arrangement, meaning it has four axles on two trucks.

The B40-8 was designed mainly for heavy road freight service on railroads that preferred four-axle locomotives for better speed and lighter track wear. It offered improved electronics and fuel efficiency compared to earlier models.

Several North American railroads, including Union Pacific and CSX, used the B40-8. Many of these locomotives were later rebuilt or upgraded, and some continue to operate today. The B40-8 is known for its power, reliability, and versatility.
