C40-8 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
GE introduced the C40-8 in 1987 as part of its Dash 8 series, aiming to deliver a powerful, reliable freight locomotive for heavy mainline service. Equipped with a 3,800-horsepower 7FDL-16 engine, advanced microprocessor controls, and rugged construction, the C40-8 offered improved traction, fuel efficiency, and diagnostic capabilities over earlier models.
Major North American railroads, including Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Union Pacific, quickly adopted the C40-8 for its ability to handle long, demanding freight trains. Its Dash 8 styling—sloped nose and modular body panels—made it recognizable on the rails.
The C40-8 set the stage for GE’s later Dash 9 and Evolution Series locomotives, establishing a legacy of dependable high-horsepower road power in the late 1980s and 1990s.
