5188 Covered Hopper
Prototype Information
Gunderson started production of the 5188cf 3-bay hopper in 2007. This large all-steel car measures 58 feet over the coupler centers. It fits within the Plate C clearance diagram. Each car features a capacity of 5,188 cubic feet and utilizes trough-style loading hatches. Customers choose between metal or non-metal hatch covers. The three bays each feature a 30-inch by 30-inch outlet opening. These outlets accommodate various commodities and discharge requirements.
The design evolved through several phases during the production run. Changes included the quantity and width of the side panels. Builders also added either two or four large horizontal ribs to the car sides for reinforcement. Other modifications involved the placement and design of the pulling loops. These versatile hoppers remain a common sight in grain and mineral service across North America.
