REA Steel Express Reefer

Prototype Information

The ACF REA steel express reefer was introduced in the late 1940s. Built by American Car & Foundry for the Railway Express Agency, it replaced older wood cars. These cars had all-steel construction and were designed for fast freight service. They carried perishable goods, often on passenger trains. Most had ice bunkers, though some were later rebuilt with mechanical refrigeration. The cars featured high-speed trucks and steam or electric train line connections. They served into the 1960s before being phased out by mechanical reefers and highway competition.
