4427 "High Side" Covered Hopper
Prototype Information
Pullman-Standard launched the PS-2CD 4427 low side covered hopper in late 1963 to meet the growing demand for efficient bulk commodity transportation. Designed for dry goods like grain, cement, and plastic pellets, the car featured a 4,427-cubic-foot capacity and a rugged exterior. Its body had straight side sills and a distinctive 4-3-4 rib pattern, while the roof carried a full-length trough hatch for fast top loading. Three center bays with gravity outlets handled unloading.
Between 1963 and 1966, Pullman-Standard built around 19,000 of these cars. They replaced smaller hoppers in many fleets and pushed efficiency forward. Railroads like Santa Fe, Rock Island, and Union Pacific, along with leasing giants such as GATX and North American Car Company, snapped them up for grain service and general freight.
These hoppers ran hard across North America. You could spot them in long grain trains moving across the Midwest or mixed freights winding through the Rockies. Their high-mounted brake wheels and 100-ton trucks made them easy to identify and tough enough to handle heavy loads.
In 1966, Pullman-Standard replaced the low side version with a high side design that improved unloading angles and raised the center of gravity. Still, many low side cars kept working well into the 1980s and beyond. Some survive today on shortlines or in storage fleets.
