Prototype Information

Built by EMD from 1949 to 1954, the E8 was powered by two 12-cylinder 567B engines generating 2,250 horsepower. A total of 449 A-units and 46 B-units were produced, primarily for passenger service. Used by major U.S. railroads, several units were later modified for commuter service, with many preserved today.
