53' Rebuilt Well Car
Prototype Information
The North American intermodal landscape of the 2000s was a patchwork of sizes. Units ranged from 20’ pups to 53’ domestic boxes. By the early 2010s, railroads and trucking companies pushed for standardization to cut costs. This shift cemented the 53’ domestic box and 20’/40’ international units as the new industry standards.
As the 48’ container faded into obsolescence, TTX faced a dilemma. They owned thousands of 48’ well cars built in the mid-to-late 90s. These cars were still in their prime. Rather than scrap the steel, TTX launched an aggressive rebuilding program. They chopped the 48’ wells down to 40’ to create the rugged “40ft Heavy” cars. Alternatively, they stretched the wells to accommodate the now-dominant 53’ containers.
