GP9 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive that EMD built from 1954 to 1963. It delivers 1,750 horsepower with a 16-cylinder 567C engine. EMD created it as an upgrade to the earlier GP7, adding more power and reliability.
Railroads across North America—like Illinois Central, Southern Pacific, and Canadian National—put the GP9 to work in freight, switching, and even passenger service. EMD sold over 4,000 units, making it one of the most successful locomotives of its era.
Many railroads rebuilt their GP9s with newer engines and modern controls. Some still operate today on shortlines, regional railroads, and in industrial roles. The GP9 earned its reputation through rugged design, versatility, and long service life.
